Within a few weeks of our second child being born I was very low and rundown and feeling lethargic and numb pretty much all the time. I’d lost count of how many times I’d been to see the doctor, and every time I was told the same thing - you’re fine it must be stress.
I finally went to see an alternative health therapist one day who recommended I would likely benefit from a detox diet, and generally learning about how to detox your body and how my eating habits may be affecting my health. It seemed a lot of people had a lot of good things to say about it, so figured it was a worthy investment of my time to at least check it out, and get to grips with what is really involved and why the natural health industry recommend following a detox diet and recommend starting with the 1 week detox so strongly.
Something else she recommended I try was a foot detox. I now use a foot spa about twice a week, but as a suitable alternative, the detox patches can do just as good a job - but with the patches you don’t get a relaxing foot massage at the same time
This is what I learnt about detoxing your body.
Drink water or herbal teas
Making sure you take in plenty of fluids is very important while you are following a detox diet as it will prevent the build up of toxins and man made chemicals in your body. Drinking plenty of water also has other health benefits like promoting regular bowel movements, stops water retention (believe it or not), and helps reduce the signs of aging by plumping up your skin. On a normal day try to drink about 2 liters of water, but increase that when the weather is hot.
As a guideline, increase your water intake by about half a liter for each hour of exercise. Choose still mineral water, or tap water that has been filtered, or boiled and then cooled. Keep your water at room temperature as it’s more refreshing that way. If you don’t always fancy water, herbal teas - loose leaf is better than tea bags as it hasn’t been processed as much. Peppermint, camomile, dandelion root, horsetail and yarrow are especially great in a detox as their hidden ingredients assist in the detox process. Green tea and redbush is also beneficial as it is very high in OPC antioxidants.

It’s actually quite easy to drink that much water when you know how. Prepare a glass with a little freshly squeezed lemon juice or root ginger when you rise - it’s the perfect way to start up your digestive system and bowel then have more water whenever you take a coffee break.
